Apple sent out invitations in late August confirming that its annual iPhone keynote takes place on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time from its Cupertino headquarters.

If you plan to watch live, that lands at 1:00 PM in New York, 6:00 PM in London, 7:00 PM across most of Western Europe, 10:30 PM in Mumbai, and in the early hours of Thursday 10 September for viewers in Tokyo and Sydney.

This year's keynote carries extra weight. It will be the first iPhone launch introduced by Apple's new CEO, John Ternus. Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone, the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. Why pre-orders are expected on a Saturday, not a Friday

Apple normally follows a metronome-like schedule: keynote on Tuesday or Wednesday, pre-orders the following Friday, phones in hand a week after that. This year that pattern breaks.

The Friday after the event is 11 September 2026, the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Apple has a track record of stepping around that date. In 2015, when the iPhone 6s keynote also landed on 9 September, the company pushed pre-orders to Saturday, 12 September rather than opening them on the anniversary.

Multiple outlets, including reporting sourced from Macworld's German sister publication Macwelt, now indicate Apple will repeat that move. The expectation is that iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders open at midnight Pacific Time on Saturday, 12 September, with general retail availability on Friday, 18 September.

Two caveats are worth keeping in mind. First, Apple has not formally announced either date, and both will be confirmed at the keynote. Second, the exact midnight start time is the least certain part of the report. Apple has historically opened pre-orders at 5:00 AM Pacific, so set an alarm for the earlier time rather than assuming you have until dawn.

The foldable model is the exception. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes it may not reach pre-order until the fourth quarter of 2026, which would mirror what Apple did with the iPhone X in 2017.

Comparing sticker prices across borders is misleading without adjusting for tax. European and UK figures include VAT at roughly 20 percent, while US prices are quoted before sales tax. A £1,199 phone is not straightforwardly more expensive than a $1,199 one.

What the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to offer

The external design carries over largely unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro, with one small cosmetic tweak reported: a partially transparent glass panel on the rear, sitting over the vapour chamber. The more meaningful changes are inside.
