Brett James Cornelius was a celebrated American country music singer, songwriter, and record producer known for penning some of the biggest hits in the genre. Born in Columbia, Missouri, in 1968, Brett initially pursued a career in medicine but soon realized his true passion was music. He released his debut album in 1995 but gained widespread acclaim as a songwriter in the 2000s.
Brett James wrote nearly 500 songs recorded by top artists, including the Grammy-winning Carrie Underwood hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” His songwriting legacy includes chart-toppers for Jessica Andrews, Kenny Chesney, Martina McBride, and Jason Aldean, among others. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, cementing his place as one of country music’s finest creators.
Tragically, Brett James passed away in a small plane crash in North Carolina on September 18, 2025. His contribution to country music remains unforgettable, inspiring fans and musicians alike with his heartfelt lyrics and memorable melodies.
